This Gorgeous Tea Kettle Finally Turned Me Into A Morning Person
As hard as it is for die-hard java lovers to believe, I’ve never been a coffee drinker. But I’ve always admired and even envied the ritual of making coffee in the morning. It seems almost meditative: grinding fresh beans into fragrant grounds, waiting for the coffee to bloom, tasting your first sip. So, over the years, I’ve tried to create a similar experience with tea, my drink of choice—and when I invested in a proper tea kettle, things really started to flow. I owe so much of that to Smeg’s Whistling Tea Kettle.
Like all of the Italian kitchen brand’s offerings, it offers a stunning, retro-inspired design that makes the device as much of a statement piece as it is a functional kitchen appliance. The shiny exterior is stamped with the Smeg logo, and the silicone handle is fashioned in the same color as the kettle itself for a truly seamless appearance. And friends always comment on how pretty and elegant it looks perched atop my stove.
(To complement the rest of my neutral-colored kitchen, I picked the white model, but it’s available in five other beautiful hues, including deep red and pastel blue.)
But there’s so much more to this kettle than just good looks. Its 2.4-quart capacity allows me to boil enough water for several large cups of tea, which is especially handy when I have friends or family visiting, and in keeping with its old-fashioned look, it lets out a classic whistle to let me know when the water is boiling. Plus, it never drips or dribbles when pouring—a persistent problem I had experienced with other kettles.
I’ve never been a morning person, but thanks to Smeg, that’s changed: Lately, I’ve been getting up a whole half hour earlier to really savor my tea ritual. I add water to the kettle’s stainless steel basin, and while I wait for the water to boil, I select a mug and tea bag (and even scan my email to get a head start on the day). When I hear the whistle, I grab the cool-touch silicone handle and flip open the spout cover to pour water into my mug—no drips, no spills. Then, I allow the tea to steep, waiting for the tea leaves to release their flavor before taking my first sip.
With this kettle in tow, my mornings have transformed from rushed to truly intentional. It’s a simple yet monumental change, and now, I can’t imagine starting my days any other way.
