Piana Sleep Launches The Rinnovo Mattress In Hopes Of A Cleaner Planet

An estimated 50,000 mattresses are dumped in landfills each day in America. Stacked up, they’d be the height of Mt. Everest every 24 hours. Piana Sleep has a tech plan to keep sleepers comfortable and landfills less congested. The brand envisions a “fully circular, sustainable global economy,” through uncommon solutions to common problems. In this case, it means using textile technologies to keep materials in circulation as long as possible. To accomplish this, Piana Sleep launched its new mattress, the Rinnovo, at the end of June with the intention that it won’t ever touch a landfill after use.

“The Rinnovo is the first of many new Piana Sleep products that will marry sustainability with industry-changing technology and world-class design,” said Silvia Galasso, Executive Vice President of Piana Sleep, in a press release. The Italian company began in 1582, and is now headquartered in Georgia where its mattresses are made and assembled by hand.

CEO Andrea Piana shares that its newest offering has the brand’s core values at heart. “Our vision was to create an exceptionally comfortable bed with specific, innovative functionalities,” he says, sharing the following features:

  • The Rinnovo Mattress is intended to be recycled when it reaches its lifespan, where the brand will recycle its materials, sanitize the recycled materials and reuse them to create other components and products, including small beds to be donated.
  • Rinnovo features V/Smart technology, which is 5 to 10 times more air permeable other standard mattresses due to a proprietary continuous airflow system. With this system, they eliminated any moisture accumulation, creating a healthier and a cooler night’s sleep.
  • Underneath the cover is a layer with what the brand calls “PureCalm Technology,” which means its fibers are infused with lavender to promote relaxation by binding to the olfactory receptors, according to the brand.
  • The Rinnovo Mattress is 31% lighter than competing beds.
  • V/Smart technology uses a non-woven design to create a VOC-free product that’s non toxic and odor-free.
  • It has what the brand calls SmartSilver technology, which is an infusion of silver in the foam for its antimicrobial properties.
  • According to Piana Sleep, it reduced CO2 emission by up to 40%, and reduced up to 52% of the energy needed to make the Rinnovo Mattress compared to competing all-foam mattresses. The brand claims that over 640 water bottles are saved with each purchase.

It also contains Cool Comfort Technology (CCT), which absorbs, stores and strategically releases heat to better regulate temperature and soothe hot sleepers. And in line with its green-friendly design, it V/Smart technology boasts several eco-conscious certifications, including the Recycled Claim Standard, Greenguard Gold and NSF-ISR. As a result, it’s a luxuriously green mattress that combines sustainable materials with plush comfort. Sleepers have the opportunity to choose between three firmness levels, including plush, medium and firm, to accommodate their sleeping position and preferences.

The brand is more interested in being sustainable than anything, Piana explains. “Our vision is a philosophical approach to business, and we do not need tradeoffs between a Circular Design of a product and its quality. It is actually the opposite. A circular design requires the highest quality, because its very core is about reducing, reusing and recycling resources.”

So, what can people expect from Piana’s company in the future? It is looking to break into the hospitality and retail industry with the Rinnovo Mattress. But beyond the fact that the Rinnovo won’t ever see a landfill, he shares that they are working on a textile substrate that would be able to detect early degenerative respiratory diseases. “A bit of a crazy idea, however, if we don’t change the status quo then we will not be able to change the world.”
