Lunya Washable Silk Sleep Mask Review: A Fan Favorite For Good Reason
There are thousands of rave reviews for Lunya’s Washable Silk Sleep Mask, and, after testing it alongside eight others for my review of the best sleep masks, I see why. Below, my Lunya Sleep Mask review details my experience with this mask over the course of four weeks of dedicated testing and comparing different models.
I’m a big fan of the Lunya mask. It delivers on everything it promises, from the blackout coverage to the stay-put design, which comes courtesy of the wide elasticized band. Compared to other sleep masks I tested, it ranked high in my top favorites. In fact, it’s one of two that I’ve continued to wear. If you’re in search of a classic sleep mask that’s comfortable to use all night, continue on to see the Lunya’s highlights and potential downsides.
Lunya Washable Silk Sleep Mask Product Features
An Oversized Fit To Completely Block Light
The front of the Lunya mask is wide and padded, with a notch for the nose and a thick elasticized band. It’s unweighted, but the generous size and secure band keep the mask comfortably in place to block light completely. And even though it’s incredibly lightweight, it does a great job of keeping light out. It’s not so tight that you can’t open your eyes, and when I tested this mask sitting at my kitchen table in the middle of the day, there was only the barest hint of light visible around my nose.
Soft And Smooth For Zero Pulling And Creasing
The mask is made with 100% washable mulberry silk and a polyester filling. The washable nature of the silk gives it a sueded feel that’s not so much slippery as it is incredibly soft and smooth. If you’re worried about kinking your hair, awkwardly bending your lashes or creasing the delicate skin around your eyes, silk is the way to go. And for ease of maintenance, you really can’t beat washable silk. This mask can go in the washing machine on a cold wash cycle and lie flat to dry, which is pretty convenient.
Classic Headband Style For A Comfortable And Secure Fit
Sleep masks traditionally have an elastic band to secure them in place. The Lunya mask improves on the design with an extra-wide band that glides over the hair and face. This also keeps the mask comfortably in place, however you sleep. I wore this while lying on my side, back and stomach and while I rolled around, actively trying to knock it loose. It stayed put, without pulling my hair in the process.
While it’s not adjustable, it comes in small and large sizes to accommodate different bodies. Plus, because it’s free of the mechanisms typically used for adjustability, such as Velcro closures and metal buckles, there’s nothing to inadvertently tug on the hair when you switch positions.
How Does The Lunya Washable Silk Sleep Mask Product Compare?
The Lunya and the Baloo Silk Sleep Stone Mask, my other top pick, are pretty comparable in size and shape. But the Lunya is unweighted and can’t be adjusted, so it’s not quite as versatile as Baloo’s mask. On the other hand, the Lunya is machine washable—a benefit the Baloo doesn’t offer.
In terms of function and comfort, I’d say they’re equally matched. Both masks work well for any sleep position, but the Lunya is the better if you’re a combination or restless sleeper. The lightweight fit and thick band keep it in place while you move around. It’s also close to $30 cheaper in some colors and prints.
How I Tested The Lunya Washable Silk Sleep Mask
I tested ten sleep masks with an eye to four specific considerations: blackout coverage, comfort level, adjustability/overall fit and ability to stay in place. I tested each mask for three days in the mornings when the sun came up, at bedtime and in the middle of the day during prime napping hours. To really evaluate their blackout abilities, I also wore the masks while standing in front of a sunny window.
I spent four weeks testing all nine masks, and the Lunya mask is one of two that I’ve continued to use.
My Expertise
I’m a regular contributor in the sleep and beauty departments at Forbes Vetted. I’ve researched, tested and written about sleep products for well over 12 years, and my recent work includes articles on the best luxury mattresses, the best sheets for adjustable beds and a personal review of the Eight Sleep Pod 3.
In September 2023, I wrote about the best sleep masks for Forbes Vetted, and this was my opportunity to personally test all of the masks I researched for that piece. I also wrote about the best weighted sleep masks in January 2024, and I was able to test almost all of those selections for this story as well.
