The Best Winter Boots We've Ever Tested
Whether you live in a climate notorious for cold conditions or in an area with bouts of extreme weather, a reliable pair of winter boots is a must-have for every closet. Not only will they keep you warm and dry in winter, but the best winter boots also provide traction to prevent accidents on slippery paths.
When shopping for the best winter boots, consider the location and activities you do most often. “For an all-in-one option, I recommend going with a boot that is waterproof, breathable, and lined with a Thinsulate material to keep your feet warm and dry,” says style coach Liz Wendler.
We tested 27 popular options in real-world conditions while considering their materials, waterproofing, durability, traction, style, comfort, and support. We also tapped Wendler and Nicole Birdsong, the senior footwear designer at Xero Shoes, for their expert advice on what to consider when shopping for the best winter boots.

They're warm, waterproof, wind-proof, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating.

They’re bulky and need some breaking in.
When choosing footwear for snow, you need to keep your feet warm, but more importantly, stay dry. The Baffin Chloe Boots are made for trudging through snow drifts, shoveling the driveway, and adventuring in wintery mountain landscapes. These boots are breathable, heat-regulating, waterproof, and wind-resistant. Despite the somewhat bulky appearance, they’re lightweight to walk in.
We wore these with regular ankle socks and felt perfectly comfortable. There’s enough room for a thicker wool sock, but heavier socks may not be necessary unless the temperatures are super low, because the boots are warm enough on their own. They fit true to size with extra space around the calves, though this is easily adjustable with the string toggle that can make it as tight or loose as you want.
We loved the cushioning on the soles and around the foot. The toe box is spacious, too. While these boots take time to put on and strap up, once they're on, your feet will feel secure even in knee-deep snow. There's ample arch and ankle support, and we didn’t feel like we were sliding around in them. They're durable and high-quality, albeit a little heavy and cumbersome to walk in for long stretches of time.
These boots tend to feel tight when you first put them on due to the removable insulating inner boot system that conforms to your foot as you wear them, so there was a little bit of a breaking-in period as the inner boot adapted to the foot. That said, after five months of use, they held up well to slush, snow, and rain. We've found them to be a durable and resilient shoe.
