The 12 Best Reading Chairs of 2024

Nothing quite compares to the feeling of sinking into a comfortable chair after a long day out. Whether you like sitting down and cozying up with a good book or binge-watching your favorite Netflix show, a quality reading chair is an essential piece of furniture to have in your bedroom, living room, or office space.

“Common styles of reading chairs include club chairs, chaise lounge, slipper, barrel, swivel, and reclining chairs,” says Mariya Snisar, the Head of Interior Design at Renowell, a home renovation company. The style of each chair serves a specific purpose, and typically satisfies a number of preferences based on “design, comfort, and functionality,” she adds.

To find a reading chair that fulfills a wide range of needs, we researched the most popular options on the market based on factors like price, size, material, and style, while also taking into account customer reviews and ratings. In addition to Snisar, we also spoke with Jennifer Nield, Vice President of Lifestyle Product at MillerKnoll, a collective of furnishing brands, for expert advice on shopping for the best reading chair.

What Stands Out

  • It’s a versatile, modular chair with various features.

What Can Be Improved

  • The cushions may not be soft enough for some customers.

The Burrow Block Nomad Armchair makes for a comfortable seat as you immerse yourself in a page-turning novel or catch up on TV reruns. Apart of the Nomad modular system, the chair can be utilized on its own, or connected to other pieces in the Nomad line to build a sleek couch or sectional. Both the fabric and legs are completely customizable, allowing customers to select from various color and material options for both aspects. There are also three different armrest styles, and the back cushions are reversible, with a tufted and untufted style that can be easily changed.

The available upgrades and added features of the chair make it extra special. For one, customers have the choice to add a matching moveable chaise, ottoman, and lumbar pillow. Plus, the convenient, built-in USB charger (with a 72 inch power cord) cuts out the hassle of fumbling with a phone cord as you unwind. The only thing to note is that the cushions are constructed with a durable and firm three-layer foam, which can be uncomfortable if you prefer a softer chair.

What Stands Out

  • This is a mid-century modern chair that doesn’t break the bank.

What Can Be Improved

  • It doesn’t recline and doesn’t have an accompanying ottoman.

Given the plentiful reading chair options on the market, the Koorlian Mid Century Modern Accent Chair is a solid option for those that love the mid-century modern style, but don’t want to overspend on comparable brand pieces. Built with high density foam and covered with durable, but soft linen, the cushions are sturdy and built to last. The button-tufted seat cushion and the tapered wooden legs give the chair a polished look, while bolster pillows provide extra arm support for reading or lounging.

While the color selection is limited to beige, gray, and blue, the chair’s neutral colors can seamlessly blend into any space without clashing with existing wall paint or room decor. The only drawback to note is that the chair does not recline or have a matching ottoman to purchase, which may be off-putting to those who like to relax with their legs up.
