How We Tested the Best Rain Shower Heads

We tested all of the rain shower heads in this guide by mounting each model either on the ceiling or on the wall, taking note of the required tools and the level of difficulty of the installation. We then initially examined each fixture for its overall design and durability. After installation, we tested each product at least twice, adjusting spray patterns and shower head direction and observing hot water longevity, changes in water pressure, and any instances of leaking or sputtering.

Additionally, we tested each model’s spray settings and how they impacted coverage, water pressure, and the ability to distribute water evenly, along with the overall level of comfort for differing shower preferences. Finally, we considered the available features for the price point for each shower head, as well as the number of finish options and the overall attractiveness.

Best Overall

Product Specs

  • GPM: 2.5
  • Spray settings: 3
  • Face diameter: 10 inches
  • Finishes: Chrome and brushed nickel

Pros

  • 3 spray settings can suit multiple preferences
  • Speed Clean nozzles integrated into the head prevent limescale buildup
  • Even, comfortable spray on all settings for complete coverage

Cons

  • Plastic construction may not be as durable as some comparable options

The Grohe Euphoria 260 rain shower head feels durable and looks attractive right out of the box. We easily mounted it on the ceiling as well as on the wall. We preferred it overhead, but wall mounting would work well in spacious showers with the proper arm attachment.

Unlike most rain shower heads on the list, this model includes adjustable spray settings that the user can control with a button in the center of the shower head. We loved having options and found it ideal for those who like a gentle rain shower but still want added pressure at times. The construction features three concentric circles serving as varying spray zones.

When used on its own, the innermost circle offers a powerful, directed jet spray that delivers on comfortable pressure. The second circle highlights the manufacturer’s SmartRain Spray technology, which provides the rain shower experience while saving on water output. When the outermost ring is turned on, users get a full 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM) water output for more body coverage yet with an even, comfortable spray. (For a more detailed discussion of GPM, read the section Water Pressure, which appears below our product reviews.) The Speed Clean nozzles are integrated into the head, allowing the user to easily wipe away limescale.

The only drawbacks to this product are the higher price tag and the plastic construction, although we didn’t feel the latter affected the overall look or feel of the shower head.

Best Bang for the Buck

DreamSpa Ultra-Luxury Rainfall Shower Head Combo

Product Specs

  • GPM: 2.5
  • Spray settings: 3
  • Face diameter: 9 inches
  • Finishes: Chrome

Pros

  • Both shower head and handheld fixture can be mounted overhead or on the wall
  • Multiple spray settings; good value for a dual shower head model
  • Easy to install compared to some other options

Cons

  • Plastic construction may limit long-term durability
  • Can’t use rain shower head and handheld fixture simultaneously
  • Water diverter could be out of reach on high ceilings

The Dream Spa rain shower head also includes a handheld shower head with a 5-foot stainless steel hose, offering the best of both worlds for a spa-like shower. This entire model—both the shower head and the handheld option—can be mounted overhead to offer a higher-pressure spray and waterfall option. We easily mounted it on the existing arm without the use of tools, and a solid brass ball joint nut allows for easy angle adjustments. It also includes a suction-cup mount for those who prefer to hang the handheld fixture on the wall. The drawback to this setup is that both options can’t be used simultaneously, but the water diverter switch to engage the attachment is on the shower head, possibly leaving it out of reach in bathrooms with higher ceilings.

This shower head is made with ABS plastic and covered with a chrome finish. It feels slightly less sturdy than other models, raising some concerns about long-term durability.

Product Specs

  • GPM: 2.5
  • Spray settings: 2
  • Face diameter: 12 inches
  • Finishes: Brushed gold, brushed nickel, matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, polished chrome

Pros

  • All-metal construction provides long-term durability
  • Handheld fixture included in the construction; comes with a holder for easy access
  • 5 finish options to match a bathroom’s current fixtures

Cons

  • Requires partial professional installation
  • Only 1 spray setting is available on each fixture

The SR Sunrise rain shower head elevates style and functionality with the option of either a spa-like experience with the rain shower head or a quick clean-and-go option with the handheld shower head. This model is constructed of stainless steel with a 10-layer chrome-plated finish, and its 12-inch oversize face offers more water coverage than some other options. The incorporation of air energy technology aims to offer powerful pressure so water flows well even under low-water-pressure conditions.

A 15.7-inch metal arm on the shower head ensures the water falls comfortably over the user. However, the arm doesn’t adjust, so an extension could be needed to mount the shower head higher for concealed installation. The L-style brass handheld shower head propels water farther outward than other types of shower heads, so users don’t need to hold it as close to the body to target areas. The sleek, modern style comes in five finishes to match the rest of most bathroom fixtures, including faucets and knobs.

We were only able to test the shower head since the handheld fixture requires professional installation, including access to internal piping. With this in mind, we think the SR Sunrise rain shower head is best suited for a remodel rather than a simple upgrade.

Best Midrange

American Standard Studio S Rain Shower Head

Product Specs

  • GPM: Available in 2.5 and 1.8
  • Spray settings: 1
  • Face diameter: 8 inches
  • Finishes: Brushed nickel, matte black, and polished chrome

Pros

  • Durable construction; made with brass for long-term use
  • 1.8 GPM flow-rate option for water conservation
  • Even spray provides ample coverage
  • Construction is small enough to be effective without taking up a lot of space

Cons

  • Doesn’t include a shower arm
  • Only 1 spray setting

It’s no surprise that the Studio S rain shower head by American Standard is a solid midrange pick, given the track record of its manufacturer. This model was simple to install, but it doesn’t include a shower arm, so users will want to purchase one separately or use an existing one.

The 8-inch round head offers a medium-pressure spray that is even and comfortable. We tried it with 2.5 GPM of output, which offered ample pressure, but it is also available in 1.8 GPM for those looking to conserve water without sacrificing comfort. The latter model is WaterSense certified for up to 30 percent water savings.

This model is constructed of coated brass, giving it a solid yet lightweight feel. The super-sleek matte black finish delivered a stylish look, and it’s also available in chrome and brushed nickel.

Best With Handheld

Moen Engage Six-Function Handheld Shower Head

Product Specs

  • GPM: 2.5
  • Spray settings: 6
  • Face diameter: 6.5 inches
  • Finishes: Brushed nickel, matte black, and polished chrome

Pros

  • 6 versatile spray settings, including a massage function
  • Good value for the size and efficiency of the shower heads
  • Strong water pressure from both the overhead and handheld sprays
  • Can use the rain shower head and handheld attachment simultaneously

Cons

  • Magnetic dock for handheld attachment could be stronger

This combination model from Moen offers substantial and evenly distributed water pressure, both from the main shower head and the handheld attachment. The water diverter is large and easy to click into place with three options—one for the main shower head, one for the handheld attachment, and one that allows them to be used simultaneously. As expected, the dual setting isn’t as strong but still offers ample water pressure and coverage.

Based on the online photos, we were surprised at how substantial this product felt out of the box. Most combination options come with a smaller main spray head, so the 6.5-inch face was a welcome surprise. This shower head features six spray settings, all with strong water pressure, especially the massage function. The handheld attachment secures to the main shower head via a magnetic docking system. While the magnet worked well, we thought it could be stronger and wondered about long-term durability. The kink-free 60-inch hose was easy to maneuver.

We installed this Moen shower head easily on our existing wall arm, simply tightening it with a wrench. The brushed nickel finish is resistant to water spots and fingerprints, and it is also available in matte black and chrome.
