The Best Indoor-Outdoor Rugs for Every Style & Budget

Whether you’re searching for a functional mat for your patio or a cozy statement piece for your living room, a good rug has the ability to enhance any space. Indoor-outdoor rugs are particularly versatile, as they are durable enough to be used anywhere and everywhere.

To help you find the best indoor-outdoor rug for your home, we tested 31 rugs in our Des Moines lab and in real-world conditions, evaluating them on several factors, including quality, texture, durability, ease of cleaning, and value. We also consulted Blythe Yost, co-founder and chief landscape architect at Tilly, and Samantha Gann, director of marketing at Rugs.com

What Stands Out

  • It doesn’t slip, slide, or bunch up, and comes in a wide range of sizes.

What Could Be Improved

  • The material is a bit thin, so you may be able to feel debris beneath it.

We found this rug to be reliable and high quality throughout our many rounds of testing, so it’s well worth the title of the best indoor-outdoor rug. The Unique Loom Border Area Rug flattened well when laid out and didn’t bunch up while we walked around it or when we dragged a chair and plant pot across it. It also proved to be flexible enough that we could fold it up and transport it, making it a great substitute for a picnic blanket.

This flexibility can be attributed to its polypropylene material, which, in addition to being pliable, is also resistant to mildew and mold. Although we had trouble removing stains during testing in our lab, we found the rug exceedingly durable and easy to clean throughout five months in the real world. Not only has the rug held up under different weather conditions, but it’s even withstood harsh scrubbing and stubborn stains, even after an accident involving blood. While the blood didn’t completely disappear, the fibers held up remarkably well with little fraying, a testament to their durability.

We recommend clearing the area of any debris before laying the rug down—when we placed small rocks under the rug, the material was thin enough that we could feel them when we walked across it barefooted. Despite this drawback, we still found this rug to be a good price and were impressed by the range of colors and sizing options. You can get this rug in neutrals including a black/gray and brown, as well as different shades of blue and red.
