The 6 Best Cooling Weighted Blankets, Tested and Reviewed

While weighted blankets might get a bad rap for being too stuffy for hot sleepers, there are plenty of breathable options on the market that won’t make you overheat. “Temperature plays an important role in our ability to fall and stay asleep, so when our bodies are too warm (either because of the room temperature or our bedding), it can disrupt our sleep stages,” says Peter Polos, MD, sleep medicine specialist.

“The cooling aspect of a weighted blanket can further assist with the promotion of sleep. The cooling pulls heat away from our body, which aids with decreasing our internal core temperature, a factor in maintaining quality sleep.”

To find the best cooling weighted blankets, we tested 35 options in our Des Moines lab and at home, considering factors such as quality, comfort, warmth, ease of cleaning, durability, and value. Our top picks include options made from breathable materials, like cotton, as well as blankets that are constructed to promote better airflow.

What Stands Out

  • The luxe blanket is made with cooling materials and has an even weight distribution.

What Could Be Improved

  • It's challenging to put the insert inside the cover.

Those who prefer a cool sleeping environment should consider this pick from Gravity, which offers all the benefits of a weighted blanket without the heat. Gravity’s Cooling Weighted Blanket has a soft, removable cover that’s made with lyocell, a breathable material made from the pulp of trees, often eucalyptus. In our lab tests, the blanket received a perfect score for its comfort and cooling abilities. It didn’t trap any heat, helping us stay cool and comfortable. Though it didn’t appear to have much airflow, we still found the blanket to be cooling.

We appreciated the blanket’s even weight distribution, as it didn’t feel heavy until we were holding and folding it. It was a bit challenging to get the insert into the cover, though once we did, it stayed securely in place. The blanket endured no significant quality changes after six months of use, though we did notice that some stitching was unraveling, which could be a cause for concern after repeated washes. (The cover is machine-washable, while the inner blanket is hand-wash only.) Despite some slight construction flaws, this blanket impressed us with its cooling properties and comfortable weight. It may be on the pricier side, but this high-quality is well worth the investment.
