San Diego-based Vuroi lends a distinct SoCal vibe to the classic chino by reimagining it in a slim cut and performance fabric that is soft to the touch. The Cascade Tech Chino Pant is made out of stretch polyester twill which is lightweight, breathable and even water resistant. While this athletic-inspired chino can be worn in wet outdoor conditions, the pants are still polished enough for corporate settings—and a small front stash pocket and zippered back welt pockets give you extra storage, too.  The fit is technically slim, but these pants won’t feel too tight or pull across muscular thighs and calves.

 What the experts say: “The soft performance fabric is great and makes these so comfortable and versatile—you could wear them to work, play golf, travel or go out,” says Polly Goodyear, owner of Styled by Polly Goodyear. “I also like that these are slim but not too slim. However, if you’re a huskier guy, you still might want to choose a roomier style.”

New York-based Todd Snyder designs both essentials and statement pieces for the modern man. The Slim Fit 5-Pocket Chino combines the comfort and sturdiness of denim—and the same classic five-pocket styling—with the elevated look of garment-dyed twill. “If the jean and the chino had a baby, it would be the 5-Pocket Chino,” jokes Albrecht. This pair has a lean fit with a slightly tapered leg, similar to Todd Snyder’s selvedge jean, but with some added stretch for extra comfort. If you prefer a roomier fit, the 5-Pocket Chino is also available in Relaxed and Straight silhouettes. 

What the experts say: Jennifer Lund-Mahoney, owner of A Sharp Dressed Man, a full service styling agency for men, recommends 5-pocket styles to her clients. “They have the same business casual look, but are less conservative and are an easier fit on most body types,” says Lund-Mahoney. “When a man with rounder hips wears a chino, the pockets can flare out, but with 5-pocket styles, the pockets lay smoothly.”
